The Question Every First-Timer Asks

If you are planning a first time river cruise, Rhine or Danube is usually the first decision. Both rivers have well-tested one-week itineraries, plenty of ship choice and easy airport access. They feel quite different, though.

Choose the Rhine If…

You love castles, wine villages and variety. A Rhine week moves through four countries, with the Middle Rhine gorge between Koblenz and Rüdesheim as the scenic peak, and a stop in Strasbourg for Alsatian food. It suits travelers who like many shorter stops. Read more at Rhine Riverboat Cruises.

Choose the Danube If…

You want grand cities. Vienna and Budapest are two of the great capitals of Europe, and the Wachau Valley between Melk and Krems is one of the prettiest stretches of river anywhere. Danube weeks often include longer city calls, sometimes with an overnight in Vienna or Budapest. Read more at Danube Riverboat Cruises.

Still undecided?

Think about what you enjoy at home. If you like small towns and wine tasting, the Rhine. If you like museums, music and coffee houses, the Danube. And if you cannot choose, the two-week Amsterdam to Budapest voyage gives you both. Our cruise advisors are happy to talk it through.

Season can tip the balance

In spring, the Rhine’s Dutch end coincides with tulip season, while the Danube’s apricot orchards blossom in the Wachau. In autumn, both rivers are lined with harvest-time vineyards. In December, both have Christmas markets, though the Danube capitals tend to make the bigger impression. If your dates are fixed, let the season guide your first time river cruise choice between the Rhine and the Danube.

Frequently Asked Questions

For a first time river cruise, Rhine or Danube?

Choose the Danube for grand capital cities (Vienna, Budapest) and the Wachau wine valley; choose the Rhine for castles, vineyards and the variety of the Netherlands, Germany, France and Switzerland. Both are excellent first river cruises.

Can I do both on one trip?

Yes — the two-week Amsterdam to Budapest voyage links them through the Main and the Main-Danube Canal. Our sister site Europe Riverside Cruising covers it.

Which is busier?

Both are popular in peak months. Docks in places such as Budapest, Vienna, Cologne and Rüdesheim can be lively; smaller towns are quieter.
